Book Week - Meerkat Productions Incursion

Wednesday, August 24, 2022

On Wednesday, 24 August the actors from Meerkat Productions performed two plays based on Book Week shortlisted books. Students in Foundation – Year 4 viewed the adaptation of the picture book Stellarphant by James Foley.

Stella wants to be an astronaut. The only problem is she is an elephant. Every time she applies to Space Command, she is given another reason why she can’t join. This is a story about solving problems, following your dreams, and never giving up. The humour, singing and dancing, and audience participation had the students totally engaged for the entire performance.

Year 5 & 6 students viewed the younger readers adaptation of The Detectives Guide to Ocean Travel by Nicki Greenberg.

For years, 13-year-old Pepper Stark has wanted to do one thing: to join her father, the Captain, aboard the magnificent RMS Aquitania on a voyage to New York. When a priceless jewel disappears mid-voyage, Pepper unexpectedly finds herself entangled in the crime. This adaptation of the mystery genre explored the themes of family and relationships, problem solving, and dreams and aspirations. During library classes, the students had been listening to the story being read throughout the term. With over 30 chapters and 65,000 words, they had not yet learned what had happened to the missing jewel, so it was with great interest and surprise that the mystery was finally revealed.

With the Meerkat Productions team visiting and performing live for the first time since August 2019, it was wonderful to see the students so engaged and entertained by the performances.
