As part of Year 11 English, students have been studying The Longest Memory by Fred D’Aguiar. Throughout the unit, students have explored the text’s themes, values and experiences, making meaningful personal connections to their own lives, other literature and broader society.
It has been incredibly pleasing to see students actively applying their critical thinking skills to draw thoughtful parallels and contrasts between the world of the text and the world around them.
In class, students recently participated in a Jigsaw Reading activity. This involved:
Working in small groups
Analysing different passages from the novel
Collaboratively unpacking key ideas and language
Presenting their findings to the class
This approach allowed students to closely dissect a range of passages while developing their collaborative skills and confidence in oral presentations. It has been a fantastic way to deepen understanding of the text and support preparation for upcoming SAC revision.
