From the Principal

Remembrance Day

Every year, on 11 November at 11 am — the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month — we pause to remember those men and women who have died or suffered in all wars, conflicts and peace operations.

History of Remembrance Day

In late 1918, after more than four years of bitter fighting, Allied forces finally achieved peace with Germany. Entire nations cheered as fighting ceased and the armistice that ended fighting in the First World War took effect at 11am on 11 November 1918.

One year later, commemorations to mark the anniversary of the end of the war were held across the Commonwealth. This day became known as Armistice Day. By the end of the Second World War Armistice Day had grown from solely a remembrance of the men and women of the Great War into something larger, becoming a day to honour all those who had fallen in war.

11 November became known as Remembrance Day. On this day, we remember all who have died in battle and all those affected by war.

A prayer for World peace

O God of the nations,
as we look to that day when you will gather people
from north and south, east and west,
into the unity of your peaceable Kingdom,
guide with your just and gentle wisdom all who take counsel
for the nations of the world,
that all your people may spend their days in security, freedom, and peace,
through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Year 12 Graduation

On Friday 21 October, we celebrated the Year 12 students graduation. It was lovely to have the Graduation Mass all together again (and not to have it online!). The Mass and the Certificate Ceremony were followed by a Dinner and Dance. It really was an enjoyable evening. But the highlight was the Mass celebrated by Mon Joe Takchi our College Chaplain.

School Masses are always a significant feature of our school life at Antonine College. Participating in Mass is an extremely important part of our Catholic faith. When faithful believers participate at Mass, they look forward to receiving Holy Communion. When we gather for the Eucharist as the body of Christ, we place our lives in God’s hands. As our Year 12 students leave school and enter a new and exciting phase of their lives, we ask them always to remember to place their lives in God’s hands.

We also ask them to show gratitude for all the Blessings God has given them and will continue to give them, and to remember that God asks us to give the first and best to Him. This includes giving the first hour of our week to Him through participation in the Sunday Mass. It includes regular prayer, and it includes caring for others and for His creation.

Are these things too much to give to God who has given us everything?

We wish Year 12 students all the best as they complete final exams and await their results. May they always be happy and keep close to God.

Faith Development

Preparing for Antonine Day

At Cedar Campus we are very fortunate to have Sr Veronique guiding and supporting our religious journey. In Year 6 Religion classes, we prepared for Antonine Day by having Sr Veronique come and talk to the students about the history of the congregation and her journey into her spiritual life. Students navigated through the school website to find information and answer questions based on our school history.

Digital Technology @ Antonine College

Please see the link to our College Handbook for Digital Technology: https://bit.ly/AntonineDigHandbook22

Just a reminder to families that students beginning Year 5 will require an iPad that they use to enhance their learning until the end of Year 8 and students beginning Year 9 will require a Macbook Laptop that they use until the end of Year 12. The specifications and information regarding our use of technology is recorded in the Handbook.

At the start of the 2023 school year all students and families will be requested to sign the ICT Acceptable Usage Policy. We do this annually as we believe it is important to regularly review this information and to have a discussion about online safety at school and at home.

Year 3 Werribee Zoo Excursion

On Friday 28th of October the Year 3 students went to the Werribee Open Range Zoo. We were very excited to see all the amazing African and Australian animals. Some of our favourites were the lions, gorillas, Vervet Monkey’s, hippos, meerkats, koalas and kangaroos. We spent the day learning about animal’s habitats and their survival from their predators. One thing I learnt was that you can tell if an animal is a carnivore or herbivore from their skulls. We were a little disappointed we couldn't see the giraffes, zebras and rhinos because of floods but we loved all the animals we did get to see and had a great day.

Year 5 Oz Harvest

As part of the Year 5 Inquiry and Literacy Units – we have been participating in Oz Harvest’s “FEAST” school program. This program aims to teach students all about food waste and sustainability. It is a program designed to inspire kids to eat healthier, waste less and be change-makers in their local community.

- Ms Laura Irons

“Did you know that there is enough food waste produced to feed everyone worldwide? Crazy isn’t it!

In the world, people waste so much food that if food waste was a country, it would be the third biggest emitter of greenhouse gases after USA and China. If humans eliminated food waste, 4.4 million tonnes of CO2 would be saved per year. 1 in 9 people don’t have food to eat! That’s 793 million people who are undernourished! If 1/4 of the world’s food waste was reduced, everyone in the world would have food to eat.”

Year 6 Camp - Student Reflection

On the 2nd of November, the Year 6’s went to Phillip Island to experience camp at “CYC - The Island”. We had a blast there! On the first day of arrival, we drove to a park near Phillip Island to enjoy some delicious snacks that we had packed for the first day. We drove some more until we stopped at Nobbies, which included a beautiful lookout over the beautiful beach, however, it was very cold!

After some more driving, we had finally reached our camp! We settled into our cabins, and were instructed on what to do around the camp and what not to do! After settling in, we headed down to the beach and swam with the calm waves, guarded by two lifeguards. Concluding our swim, we arrived at the Cabins, showered, and had a delicious dinner consisting of chicken schnitzels and hot fries! We ventured back into the cold to watch the penguin parade. After that we returned back to the cabins, got ready for bed and lights were out by 10:00 pm.

- Maria Khabbazeh 6A

On the second day of camp we woke up as the beginning of a fun day began. First we ate breakfast which was toast or cereal and then went on a beach walk which was over an hour but everyone enjoyed the big waves. We found many crabs and Mr Blanco led the way as he showed us some beautiful caves. When we arrived back at CYC we participated in many activities such as archery, flying fox, pedal racers, mechanical wall and the circatron with many hilarious reactions. Later that evening we had some delicious pasta and garlic bread and delightful cheesecake. That night we all sat around the bonfire roasted marshmallows and told scary stories. After a long day we had supper and went to bed ready for a long drive back home.

- Sienna Semaan 6B

On the third day at Phillip Island the Year 6 students woke up bright and early ready to explore for the final day at camp. After a great last breakfast we cleaned our cabins, made sure everything was packed away and had some free play time until the busses arrived. We left CYC and went to the Wildlife Park where we had an amazing experience feeding animals like emus, kangaroos, wallabies, ducks and more. When we finished up we had our last lunch altogether at the beautiful San Remo. Finally, we hopped back on to the bus for our 2 hour trip back to school making it just in time to go home. It was the best first camp experience anyone could ask for!

Chess Tournament - Student reflection

Hi my name is Samuel and I competed in the chess tournament semi-finals. When I arrived, I saw lots of kids and was thinking it could go one way or another, nevertheless I played and had a chat with my friends and played some good matches but in the end, I scored a 3 out of my seven games it was a fun day and I would like to do it again.

- Samuel 6C

On the 25th of October, Antonine College we’re given the opportunity to participate in the Northern Star Chess Tournament Semi Finals. We had an amazing experience versing many other schools, winning and losing some games. There were 6 Antonine students that qualified to the semi finals but unfortunately, none of us were able to make it to the Finals ending our experience there. On the other hand, we were very lucky to have a chance to participate in this event. All the students had a great time and would love to go again. Lastly, I would like to thank our chess teacher, Mrs Atme for giving us a spot in the tournament and taking us to the event.

Year 9 WW1 History Incursion

Our Year 9 students were immersed into World War One with a presentation from Robert. He brought a variety of artefacts to show the students and teach them what life was like during this period. Some students had the opportunity to dress up in soldiers clothing and get up and close to a replica Lee Enfield Rifle.

- Ms Stephanie Hartnup

The Incursion was very interesting, it was fun to learn about what the soldiers would wear, eat, and use to fight in war, also what was engaging was that we learnt what a soldier would have to do if one of their troops died. The presenter Robert, who was a trainee to fight in war described to us the side effects of what can happen to you mentally and physically, such as shell shock which only occurred when you have been exposed to heavy bombing. He also showed us the equipment the army would use such as grenades, rifles, and bayonets. Overall, it was a good experience to learn about World War 1 in a fun way.

St Joseph Earth Warriors - Red Cycle Program

This month the Earth Warriors have actively participated in a variety of projects to better the earth while contributing and discussing as a team. Some of these projects include of creating posters from our school bins to differentiate what should and shouldn’t go in the recycling, ordering paper recycling bins to place into classrooms and finally picking up Red Cycle plastics to recycle at our local Woolworths. Although this doesn’t seem like much it has had an effect on students to keep the earth as sustainable as possible and fight the climate crisis.

- Hannibal Diab 8B

Thank you to those teachers who accommodated the Earth Warriors as they collected soft plastics to send to the Red Cycle Program. This plastic will be used to make park benches and roads. We collected two whole bags, which will be taken to Woolies!

Instrumental Music Program

Antonine College is proud to continue the development of our performing arts program, especially in music. Performing arts offers a variety of benefits including developing student wellbeing goals such as developing self-esteem and confidence, working as a team, creativity, and self-expression.

We are excited to continue and expand our music instrumental program into 2023 and welcome all students from foundation to year 12 to participate. Lessons are offered weekly and are conducted in small groups, under the instruction of our highly skilled and experienced instrumental tutors. We offer a variety of instruments including guitar, drums/percussion, keyboard, vocals, as well as some Middle Eastern instruments such as the ney, derbakkeh, qanun and the oud.

Students interested in enrolling for next year are encouraged to collect and return an instrumental music form from the front office.

SACCSS Year 7/8 Boys Soccer

“The season that could’ve been”

If I/the team could summarise this season in 2 words, they would be “What if”. The season drew to a close on Thursday 3rd of November where Antonine travelled to La Trobe Stadium to compete against the ladder leaders- Caroline Chisholm College. Requiring a win and Thomas Carr College to lose to make the finals, we started off with some changes in positions due to some players absent, adopting an attacking formation. Unfortunately, Caroline Chisholm came out on top and won. Throughout the season we saw some excellent performances from players, in particularly Nicholas Toma, Ali El Saleh, Lucas Shamoon and Jemi Aldoski.

Nicholas, the team captain, led from the front, scoring and assisting goals, but also tracking back to help the defence on many occasions. Ali was critical to the team as he made numerous great saves throughout the season, often keeping us in games. Lucas’ accurate passes to the striker and wingers played an important part when we attacked and Jemi was integral to the defence, distributing the ball well and clearing it when the opposition attacked.

We look to 2023 now.

As the competition comes to a close, I am pleased to announce that the girl’s soccer team has finished the season 1st on the ladder undefeated. With only 1 draw and 5 wins we enter finals period with our next match against Kolbe College. Year 9/10 girls’ soccer premier league team earlier this year also finished 1st on the ladder and won the grand final and our junior girls plan on doing the same. GO ANTONINE!
